Docomomo WEWA recently prepared and submitted a Seattle Landmark nomination application for the former Pacific Architect & Builder building in the Eastlake neighborhood (1945 Yale Place E).
The nomination will be reviewed by the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board at its meeting on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. The meeting is open to the public and the Board takes public comments (location: City Hall, 600 4th Ave, Floor L2, Room L2-80, Boards & Commissions). The meeting agenda comes out the week before the meeting. The meeting starts at 3:30 pm but there will be other agenda items before ours. Please consider attending the meeting to provide comment in support of the nomination, or submit written comments to the Landmarks Preservation Board Coordinator (Erin Doherty, email@example.com, no later than Tuesday, June 6, 3 pm). It’s best to submit written comments a few days before the deadline.
Built in 1959-1960 as publishing offices and printing plant for Pacific Architect and Builder magazine, the property meets at least three of the landmark designation standards. The following language can be used for talking points to make comments.
– The building embodies the visual characteristics of the Modern Movement in its architectural design, style, and method of construction-the main character-defining feature is its hyperbolic parabaloid roof;
– The building is associated with Pacific Architect and Builder magazine, an important industry publication promoting the unique qualities of Modern architecture in the Northwest during a pivotal economic era centering around the 1962 World’s Fair;
– The building is an outstanding work of the architect, A.O. Bumgardner & Partners, and structural engineer, Worthington, Skilling, Helle & Jackson.
